Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter, which is the muscular ring that connects the esophagus with the stomach. GERD causes this sphincter muscle to become weak or fail to close tightly, which causes food and stomach acids to flow back (reflux) into the esophagus. These acids can cause the lining of the esophagus to become inflamed or irritated, which can cause a burning chest pain and sometimes a sour taste or cough.
Anti-reflux surgery is a treatment for GERD/acid reflux if symptoms are not relieved through other treatments, such as antacid medication, decreasing the size of meals, losing weight, and avoiding certain acidic foods. If chronic GERD is left untreated, more serious health conditions can develop, such as esophagitis, esophageal ulcers, bleeding, or scarring of the esophagus. Symptoms of GERD are feelings of burning in your throat or chest, burping or gas bubbles, or trouble swallowing food or fluids.
