Matthew S. French, MD, FACS, FASMBS, a native of New Orleans and graduate of Isidore Newman School, received his undergraduate degree from Washington and Lee University and medical degree from Tulane University Medical School. He completed his general surgery residency in 2000 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Dr. French is fellowship trained in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery and Ultrasound.
Dr. French joined the Surgical Specialists of LA in 2001. He has performed over 3000 advanced laparoscopic weight loss procedures including gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, lap-band, duodenal switch and revisional bariatric surgery. He also offers the non-surgical weight loss options, Obalon and ReShape Balloons and is presently an investigator for the Spatz3 Intra-gastric Balloon FDA Trial. Additionally, he specializes in minimally invasive general surgery including micro-laparoscopy, anti-reflux surgery, para-esophageal hernia surgery and laparoscopic ventral and inguinal hernia repair.
Dr. French has been a lecturer and instructor for the American College of Surgeons Abdominal Ultrasound Course as well as a past instructor for the Advanced Trauma Life Support at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. He is published in Laparoscopic Ventral Hernia Repair (Salvador Morales-Conde ) and SAGES Manual of Perioperative Care in Minimally Invasive Surgery (Ehelan, Fleshman and Fowler).
Dr. French is a Fellow of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. He is also a board member for the New Orleans Blood Center and past board member for Volunteers of America of Greater New Orleans.
