The duodenal switch procedure, also known as the biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS) is performed on morbidly obese patients. The duodenal switch operation permanently removes a majority of the most stretchable portion of the stomach, reducing a patient’s stomach size by 80%. The procedure also reroutes the intestines and removes the gallbladder, but basic stomach structure remains the same.
Patients will feel full sooner while eating due to a smaller stomach, and because the stomach is smaller, it will also secrete fewer hunger-causing hormones. The rearranged intestines and removed gallbladder cause the body to absorb fewer calories. Most patients will typically lose 70% or more of their excess weight within two years of this procedure. Duodenal switch surgery can also cure or alleviate a number of health problems that are associated with weight issues, such as diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea, and other conditions.
The duodenal switch procedure may require more than six hours of operating time and around three to five days of recovery time in the hospital following the procedure. However, unlike gastric bypass procedures, patients will not experience a “dumping syndrome” if they consume sugary or fatty foods. Patients will have to change their diets to get enough healthy calorie foods and take vitamin supplements after the duodenal switch procedure, as the stomach is less able to absorb minerals and nutrients. It is also essential for patients to adhere to any scheduled follow-up programs with their doctors.
