Patients who have undergone previous weight loss surgeries such as lap band surgery, vertical banded gastrectomy or gastric bypass and are experiencing weight regain after their surgery are good candidates for revisional bariatric surgery. In revisional bariatric surgery, surgeons modify or repair an earlier operation that may have produced inadequate weight loss, weight regain, or persistent side effects.
Weight regain can occur due to an inadequate primary surgery or accommodation by the body to the initial procedure performed. While there are higher risk of complications with revisional bariatric surgery than the patient’s initial procedure, the survival rate of the revisional surgery is just as high as the initial procedure’s (99.8%). There are several options to address previous unsatisfactory gastric sleeve operations: re-sleeving, converting to duodenal switch, converting to Lap-Band, or converting to gastric bypass.
The recovery time of a revisional bariatric procedure depends on the patient’s initial procedure, what the problem is with that initial procedure, and what is being modified or repaired.
